A surfer stalls when he/she leans back upon the back foot (and often is accompanied by dragging the hand in the wall of the wave) in an effort to slow forward momentum. Common reasons to stall:

  1. to position one's self deeper in the tube
  2. to position one's self in a more critical section of the wave in order to launch a maneuver like a re-entry or aerial.
